The main house, is aproximately 3,400 square feet, and the attached brick Carriage House, which was the original kitchen building, is aproximately 900 square feet. The property can be used as one large home, with inside access from the main house to the carriage house. Although currently the carriage house is income producing as a completely separate residence, it would also serve nicely as a guest house or in-law suite. It can convert easily either way.
When you walk through the front door of the main house you immediately notice the high eleven foot ceilings and a wonderful view of the large back yard through the glass-paned rear door. Off of the main foyer, through seven foot wide openings, are two large formal front rooms that mirror each other, each having original fireplaces. To the right is the formal parlor or library which leads to the half bath and also a utility room. To the left of the foyer is the formal dining room, which leads to the living room through another seven foot wide opening that has a triple door which is original to the home.
In the living room you can look through the two rear windows and see the 150+ year old ginko tree, believed by some to be the largest in the state. The living room also has its own fireplace and is open on both sides of the fireplace to the kitchen/family room. This enormous room is where most will do all of their living. The one room is 14 x 37 feet; half belonging to the kitchen and the other half belonging to the family room, but joined in the center by a bar on one side of the room and a built in desk with cabinetry on the other side. Abundant light through many windows make this room a joy to be in. In the family room is an original “jib” window/door which has the name of one of the original owners from 1893 etched in the glass. The gourmet kitchen is a cooks dream with gas cooking and an enormous amount of cabinetry, drawers and sliding shelves and also includes a large sliding shelf pantry. Abundant under cabinet task lighting and over head recessed lights, all with dimmers make the ambiance perfect.
Walk out the rear door from the foyer and step on to the double back porch. It has two ceiling fans, dimmers on the coach lights and is wired for sound with two outdoor speakers mounted at the ceiling. Step off of the porch and you will then be on the 600 square foot patio that is perfect for entertaining.
Off of the second floor landing is a door opening to the second level back porch. This porch looks onto the back yard and is a wonderful place to read or simply be. You will never know that you live in the city.
The second floor includes three 15 x 17 foot large bedrooms, each with their own original fireplace. The first is the master, and off of the master bedroom is a large 12 x 17 dressing/laundry/other room. The room is currently being used as a closet and dressing room in addition to the upstairs laundry room, but it has functioned previously as an office and has also served as an infant’s nursery.
Walk through this room and you find yourself in the spacious master bath with its double vanity and the original claw foot tub. There is a separate water closet that has a large travertine double head shower. This bathroom also has a linen pantry.
Back to the foyer and you will enter one of the two other large bedrooms, both with ample closet space, one of which is a large walk in.
Built in 1780, what we now call the Carriage House was originally the 2 story kitchen building. Until recently it was accessable from inside the main house but is currently used as an income producing apartment. It can easily and inexpensively be converted back to one large residence, with exposed brick, serves as one large great room and fully equipped eat in kitchen. It has two fireplaces, both original, which are on either end of this long room. In the middle of the room is a suspended staircase which takes you up to the second story. To the left is one bedroom with its own original fireplace and a large closet. To the right is a sitting room/den/office that also houses its own washer and dryer and leads to the full bath that has a large completely tiled shower. |
